Tommy K gave me a list of the books that he liked. I thought he did a great job summarizing them. Here they are:
1) “In The Sanctuary of Outcasts” by Neil White. An autobiography, a young overly ambitious man from Mississippi commits a ‘ white collar ‘ crime and is sentenced to a year in jail at a place called Carville in Louisiana. The kicker? The Carville complex doubles as the only medical facility for lepers in the United States.
2) “Peace like a River” by Leif Enger, a novel with a spiritual theme. The best description of heaven since ” 90 Minutes in Heaven”.
3) Anything by William Faulker. Sometimes hard to read, but if you grew up in the South it’s hard not to connect. I’ve read most all his works. Personal favorites: “Absalom, Absalom” and the “The Bear”.
4) “A Band of Angels” by Robert Penn Warren, another Southern writer, ( ever heard of “All the King’s Men”? another recommendation that he wrote). A novel set during the Civil War and prior to. Get this theme: a wealthy plantation and slave owner has a daughter, the mother dies soon after. The girl grows up privileged, the father goes bankrupt and dies. Suddenly, the creditors are selling off all the old man’s assets including the Daughter, it seems her mother was black and the daughter never knew of her true heritage.
5) “The Indian Creek Chronicles” by Pete Fromm. Another autobiography. A naive young man from the east decides to take on a job one winter in Idaho’s Bitterroot Mountains with the National Park Service monitoring a salmon hatchery. He’s snowed in for months alone in the wilderness and has limited communication with the outside world.

My favorite books are C. S. Lewis’ “Screwtape Letters” & “The Great Divorce”. Both of these books really made you stop and think about the world and your own personal circumstances. They are the kind of books that you read a couple of times and continue to gleen different and more knowledge everytime you read them. I plan to read as many of his books as I can.
